That is why we let Dzeko and Jovetic go’ – Pellegrini hails Iheanacho hat-trick

Manchester City manager, Manuel Pellegrini hailed Kelechi Iheanacho’s hat-trick against Aston Villa proves the club saying it is a proof the club made no mistake to let established stars Edin Dzeko and Stevan Jovetic to leave.
The 19-year-old Nigerian ensured Sergio Aguero was not being missed as he scored three times in the FA Cup fourth-round tie at Villa Park on Saturday, with Raheem Sterling completing the 4-0 win with a goal of his own.

PRESIDENT Muhammadu Buhari has described the judiciary as he his major “headache” in his administration’s onslaught against corruption.

PRESIDENT Muhammadu Buhari has described the judiciary as he his major “headache” in his administration’s onslaught against corruption. For him, the ongoing fight against corruption in Nigeria could only be effectively tackled with the strong supportive judiciary.
Speaking on Sunday in Addis Ababa at a town hall meeting with Nigerians resident in Ethiopia, the President said far-reaching reforms of the judiciary remained a key priority for the present administration.
“On the fight against corruption vis-à-vis the judiciary, Nigerians will be right to say that is my main headache for now.
“If you reflect on what I went through for twelve years when I wanted to be the President, I attempted three times and on the fourth attempt through God and the use of technology, it was possible for Nigerians to elect an APC candidate as President.
“In my first attempt in 2003, I ended up at the Supreme Court and for 13 months I was in court. The second attempt in 2007, I was in court close to 20 months and in 2011, my third attempt, I was also in court for nine months.
“All these cases went up to the Supreme Court until the fourth time in 2015, when God agreed that I will be President of Nigeria,’’ the President said.
Buhari assured members of the Nigerian community that with the support of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, (CJN), Justice Mahmud Muhammed, he would continue to do his best to improve the nation’s judicial administration system.
On urban development and infrastructure, Buhari announced that the Federal Government had ordered a review of several railway transport projects signed by the previous administration with the Chinese government.
“The Chinese government was very generous to Nigeria on the projects signed with the previous government because they agreed to pay 85 per cent of the project.
“But the Nigerian government was unable to meet up with its counterpart funding of 15 per cent, so the Chinese government was unable to make any impact on the project,” he said.
The President said he had directed the Ministers of Transportation, Finance, Power, Works and Housing, to revisit the agreements and explore ways of re-approaching the Chinese government for assistance.
He added that the Chinese government had indicated interest to assist Nigeria on project financing through its Export-Import Bank.
Commenting on the proposed N6.077 trillion 2016 budget submitted to the National Assembly, the President said for the first time in Nigeria, the budget will be largely financed from non-oil revenue.
He identified the collapse of the international oil market and oil theft in the Niger Delta as main reasons for projecting more revenues to fund the budget from the non-oil sector.
“The theft of the oil market by some Nigerians that happen to live there who feel that the oil belongs to them and not the country is an irritating thing for those of us who participated in the civil war for 30 months in which at least 2 million Nigerians were killed,” he said.
The President also said that the proposed budget would focus on increasing efficiency and transparency in government operations and the blocking of leakages from revenue generating agencies.
He added that the recovered assets of the country would also be used to reduce the budget

Apple Sets Its Sights on Virtual Reality

Facebook, Google and Microsoft have all delved into virtual and augmented reality technology. Now Apple is dipping a toe into the space too.
Apple recently acquired an augmented reality start-up called Flyby Media and hired Doug Bowman, who ran the Center for Human-Computer Interaction at Virginia Tech and who has researched topics such as immersion in virtual environments.
An Apple spokesman confirmed the Flyby deal and said, “Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time, and we generally do not discuss our purpose or plans.” The acquisition and the hire wereearlier reported by The Financial Times.
Virtual and augmented reality are growing fields in the technology industry. Supporters like Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook’s chief executive, have said virtual reality is the next big platform after mobile. The technology, which can make users feel transported by immersing them in different environments, has the potential to transform games, movies, social networks and work. Almost $4 billion has been invested in virtual reality start-ups since 2010, according to PitchBook, a research firm.
Developing virtual and augmented reality technology is about creating “the next operating system,” said Linc Gasking, co-founder and chief executive of 8i, a company that creates virtual reality software. “Apple currently owns the computer in your pocket, and it needs to be part of the next big user interface if it wants to retain that ownership.”
Facebook bought the virtual reality headset maker Oculus for $2 billion in 2014. Microsoft has demonstrated its HoloLens device, which is focused on augmented reality, a related technology that lets people wearing smart glasses or headsets see and manipulate digital objects in the real world. And Google is the biggest outside investor in Magic Leap, a secretive start-up that is developing a wearable device for mixing real and digital images. Google’s Cardboard glasses also let people watch virtual reality video on their smartphones.
Apple has not, until recently, been publicly enthusiastic about virtual reality. While it has made tiny acquisitions in the field, it has not made a deal as large as Facebook’s Oculus purchase and has not brought any hardware to market.
Now rivals are delivering products to consumers. In addition to Google’s Cardboard, an inexpensive product that has been on the market for months, Facebook plans to ship its $599 Rift headset in March. Facebook’s partner Samsung is already selling a more rudimentary $99 headset, theGear VR.
Apple has filed dozens of virtual reality-related patents in the past, including one in 2008 for a head-mounted display apparatus. The patent illustration shows a large pair of glasses that can hold an iPhone, and it looks much like Google’s Cardboard.
Matt Miesnieks, who is setting up an augmented reality-focused venture capital fund, said Apple had also been meeting with “advanced optics” start-ups, referring to the lens that a viewer looks through. Apple currently lacks such technology, he said.
In a phone call with analysts to discuss Apple’s most recent quarterly results, the company’s chief executive, Timothy D. Cook, was asked about virtual reality. He said he thought the technology was more than a niche.

“It’s really cool,” Mr. Cook said. “It has some interesting applications.”

Telecoms Operators Threaten To Shut Down Operations In Six States (See List)

Telecom operators have threatened to shut down network services in seven states over closure of Base Transceiver Stations (BTS) by the state governments.
Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON) Chairman, Engr. Gbenga Adebayo, while addressing a press conference on the state of the industry yesterday said Ogun, Ondo, Akwa Ibom, Ebonyi, Osun and Kaduna states are treating telecoms industry as an extractive sector by imposing myriads of taxes on operators and closing down the BTS sites arbitrarily
ALTON’s chairman said many sites in the listed states have been shut down or about to be shut by agents of government not minding the security and economic implications on their states.
According to him, the Association has resolved that its members will not reopen any sites closed by state or local government authority.
“The arbitrary sites closure without following the Nigeria Communications Commission, (NCC) guidelines and best practices will no longer be tolerated,” he added.
He noted that ALTON’s members continue to record cases of sites closures in many states in an attempt to force service providers to pay local taxes and levies.
He said some of these levies and taxes are multiple in nature because most of them are only aimed toward telecom operators.
He said, “We are considering very carefully the situation of site closure and harassment of our members in some of those states and we may begin anytime soon to have them feel the impact of their actions on telecom operators if they do not desist from deliberate disruption of our operations.”
He said ALTON will serve the necessary warnings and if such practices continue: “we are then faced with two options: first is to pay the charges by such state government, and to increase the tariff chargeable for calls originating and terminating from networks in such states: With all the attendant service delivery issues.
“Where such actions on the part of government continue: we shall then advise all our members, after due consultation with relevant authorities, because of the security and economic implications, to shut down the entire network in such state for one full day as a final warning to such state or local government area. Enough is enough.
He appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari to place a presidential declaration on “telecom Infrastructure as Critical National Security and Economic Infrastructure” as provided by the cybercrime law of 2015.
